I thought the teeth made him a bit more disturbing than just the tongue/tentacle. And the description called for "clawed appendages", so yeah, why not scorpion-type claws, hmmm? Note the big change between the tongue in this version and the final - I thought this composition led the eye too much out of the painting, so I changed it during the painting phase.
