I have a lot of sketch pages like this, where there are two versions of a figure right next to each other. Usually, as with this one, there's my very first sketch (here it's on the left), and a more refined iteration right next to it. My attempts to figure out the lighting are already evident.
Also, as you can see, I was toying with putting in another zombie behind the main one. I dropped that when I started painting; as nice as he looked there (maybe "nice" isn't exactly the word...), it just made the composition too cluttered. He's a charismic chap, though, so I'm sure I'll use him someday.
